Delipidated human serum is primarily used in diagnostics and IVD assay development where lipemia (elevated lipid content) represents a matrix interference factor. It provides a lipid-depleted human serum matrix for interference studies per CLSI EP7 guidelines, as a blank matrix for lipoprotein research, or as a base for antibody assay development when combined with IgG depletion.
Standard delipidated serum (SP1010) has lipoproteins and lipids removed while leaving IgG and hormones intact. Double charcoal treated and delipidated serum (F12010) undergoes an additional activated charcoal treatment that also removes hormones, steroids and small hydrophobic molecules — making it the preferred matrix for endocrine assay development and steroid receptor studies.
Yes — delipidated human serum is used in lipid metabolism research where a lipid-free serum baseline is required. It is not recommended as a general-purpose cell culture supplement because lipid removal also reduces growth-supporting components. For general cell culture, standard Human Serum Type AB is more appropriate.
