Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid component of blood remaining after removal of the cellular fraction and clotting factors. It is obtained by centrifugation of aseptically collected, clotted fetal bovine blood and triple sterile filtered through 0.1 µm filters.
FBS contains essential proteins and growth factors that enable the maintenance and proliferation of eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also provides adhesion factors that create a "coating effect" on plastic surfaces, promoting cell adhesion.
Tetracyclines are antibiotics used in livestock for treating bacterial infections or disease prevention. As a result, standard FBS can contain traces of tetracycline derivatives that can alter biological parameters and particularly severely interfere with tet-inducible gene expression systems.
